Celebrating Transition: A Ceremonial Holistic Wellness Visit

It is a defining characteristic of our doula role to support birthers to explore intentionality in the transformation that occurs after the birth of our babies. In postpartum, we seek to thank the body for its work in pregnancy and birth. By doing so we reach a stage of completion in the cycle of being initiated into motherhood. Commonly referred to as the “closing of the bones,” this retreat provides a time out for the new parent to be witnessed in their transformation from maiden to mother while having their body “closed.” By sequentially wrapping the body with a long scarf - which literally feels like a big hug from head to toe! - we close the body after having been portal to new life-gestation-and-then-coming into the world. While at one point in time variations of the closing of the bones was known and used worldwide, today this practice has been kept in tact and taught primarily by Indigenous Peoples of Latin America.

For those of us who identify as white birth keepers who have been severed from our origin traditions, we honor the teachers who have gifted us this ceremonial integration work (Rachelle Garcia Seliga, Ann Drucker, Ms. Beatrice Waight). It continues to be our charge to be remembered into our eastern and western european lineages of earth based spirituality, reclaiming where our own ancestors were cut off wisdoms.

Other elements of the visit may include: tea and intention setting, space clearing, moxa treatment, herbal pelvic steaming, realignment of the birth energy field, bodywork, herbal spiritual bath, a nourishing snack and/or a prepped meal.

Partners are welcomed and encouraged to participate!

Placenta Encapsulation

For centuries, across cultures and species, new mothers have ingested their placenta after delivery- some for ritual purposes and some spiritual; all replenished much- needed nutrients, mainly iron and protein. In addition to the above, consuming the placenta post-birth may help:

  • Regulate hormones in the body

  • Encourage oxytocin release

  • Encourage nutrient- rich breastmilk production and flow

  • Decrease the probability of developing postpartum depression

  • Increase energy

Encapsulation

  • Your placenta will be prepared using the Raw Foods Inspired Method of Preparation which means the placenta is sliced while still “raw” and dehydrated immediately. The placenta is dehydrated at 118 degrees according to USDA Safety recommendations. It is believed that essential hormones are retained and the iron content is made bio-available using the Raw Method. This method also yields a high number of capsules. It is recommended as the most balancing as it produces both emotionally balancing properties and increased energy.

Umbilical Keepsake

  • Your umbilical cord will be shaped and dried into a life-long keepsake.

Placenta Print

  • Every placenta is unique, like a finger print. A keepsake print can be made of your placenta on high quality art paper using the natural blood or watercolors.

Tincture

  • A tincture is made from a thumbnail size piece of “’raw” placenta and 100 proof vodka, which is aged for 6 weeks postpartum (or longer if you choose) before it is ready for use. The tincture will be created for you in a 4oz glass dropper bottle and can be used at any point in the future during times of emotional or hormonal stress including PMS and menopause. The entire placenta can also be made into a mother tincture instead of capsules if preferred.

Healing Salve

  • Made using pure, organic ingredients to create a healing salve which can be used by both mother and baby. Common uses include reducing the discomfort and appearance of caesarean scars (after the incision has completely closed), treatment of sore and cracked nipples, hemorrhoids, eczema, diaper rash, and other skin irritations.
