Nutrition

It is rare that there is a more nutritionally demanding time during a woman’s life than during preconception, pregnancy and postpartum. Nutrient-dense foods and whole food supplementation are needed to nourish and prep your body. Everything mama does from preconception through postpartum affects the health of the baby. Nothing can replace the benefits of a healthy diet and lifestyle during pregnancy, including the right supplementation and self-care practices.

A nutrient-dense diet is important during the preconception, prenatal and postpartum periods. Eating a balanced diet full of carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals helps to ensure that all essential nutrients are available to the body. This helps contribute to the growth and development of baby and nourishes mama. Eating properly during pregnancy and postpartum also helps with your body’s ability to repair itself after giving birth.

Good nutrition should continue into the 4th trimester, after you have given birth and in the postpartum period. Sometimes eating well can be the first thing sacrificed when a new baby is home. This is unfortunate because proper nutrition and nutrient-dense foods are a preventive and health boosting measure against emotional distress and exhaustion. A nutrient-dense diet is also important for proper healing of the body and offering optimal nutrition to your little one!

A holistic and functional nutrition consultant will provide guidance, instruction, education and be a true partner in your journey to enjoying your new baby and finding optimal health and nutrition.

Lauren Felts Chen is an Ayurvedic postpartum doula, family chef, and certified nutritionist who specializes in prenatal, postpartum and infant nutrition. She helps her clients maximize their health through focusing on the right foods and nutrients to support physical recovery from labor, emotional well-being, and nutrient-dense breast milk production. She’s worked in all aspects of the health and wellness field from her role as a nutrition editor for a well-known health magazine, publishing a book on kidney health and assisting in the opening of a top raw food restaurant and culinary school in Los Angeles. After the birth of her first son, it became very clear that her career’s focus should be redirected to the care of mothers and children. She believes that mothers have the greatest impact on the health and wellness of society as a whole, and through their education and support, we will all benefit and thrive. Originally from Los Angeles, she graduated from University of Southern California with a degree in nutrition. Here’s a summary of her education in nutrition:

  • Bachelors in Nutrition from University of Southern California

  • Degree as a Certified nutritionist from American Health Science University
